Internship Course ENGL 4960

The Internship in Writing and Editing

Enrolling in ENGL 4960, students work internships in writing, publishing, public relations, journalism and other fields, earning from 3 to 12 credit hours. Students may take the course more than once, working two or more internships, for up to 12 credit hours.

There are no classes for this course. However, you are expected to submit a portfolio of your work at the end of the internship. Students from any campus may register for ENGL 4960 during the “cross-campus registration period.”

Registering and Expectations

Getting Started

  1. Find an internship. Dr.Brehe can help.
    • Internship sites outside of Georgia may be possible, but you will need to meet requirements set by State Authorization laws.
    • The State of Georgia offers two full-time paid internships in these two programs:
  2. To earn three hours of course credit in ENGL 4960, arrange with the supervisor at your site to work approximately 200 hours.
  3. Submit a Work Agreement form (PDF) to Career Services to have your internship approved.
  4. Email or meet with Dr. Brehe on the Dahlonega campus to go over plans and expectations.
  5. Register for ENGL 4960 as you would for any cross-campus course.

 Course Work

  1. Read the course syllabus, which is available from Dr. Brehe or on D2L.
  2. Read a book about the field in which you work. Your site supervisor may suggest a suitable title.
  3. Each week during the internship, email a weekly activity report to Dr. Brehe.  
  4. After you complete your internship, you and your site supervisor will submit reports to Career Services.
  5.  Finally, submit a portfolio to the Department of English. (The department will keep the portfolio.) It should include the following:
    • An essay about your reading
    • An essay about your work experience
    • Substantial samples of your work
