Dr. Gilstrap is a native of Atlanta, GA, area, but currently resides in Gainesville, GA, with his wife and two dogs. He completed his dissertation, "'A Revolution By Due Course of Law': Matthew Arnold, G.W.F. Hegel, and the State's Revolutionary Role," under the direction of Dr. Paul Schmidt at Georgia State University. He has been awarded several in-house and external grants for research and pedagogy and is an alumnus of the "Infusing Asian Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum" program at the University of Hawai'i East-West Center (2014). He has published extensively on Victorian literature, particularly the work of poet and essayist Matthew Arnold.
