Where do you work, and what do you do in your current occupation?

I work from home. I am a graphic designer offering brand identity, and all design needs for marketing materials. I also create acrylic paintings, do commissioned fine art paintings, illustrations and art on furniture.

What do you enjoy about your current to occupation? Do you consider yourself successful? In what way?

I enjoy very much that I can work from home. I do consider myself successful that I am able to work in a field I enjoy and for myself.

What led you to pursue your current line of work?

Using creativity and my love of art to fill a need that would provide steady work.

Do the skills and knowledge that you gained as a student in the Department of Visual Arts (DoVA) contribute to your current occupation? If so, in what way?

Yes. The things I learned about design and composition and technique set the foundation for my career to begin.

Now that you have a vantage point to reflect on your art education, what would you do differently?

Take a larger variety of classes to explore even more mediums.

Do you have any words of wisdom for current DoVA students?

Think about how what you are learning will apply to real world jobs, filling needs for people and/or businesses that will help you to support yourself and your family doing something you love. The fine art and graphic design worlds are quickly changing.

The graphic design field is becoming large and there are many designers and many online software programs exist for people to DIY it. Be sure you learn the foundations of design and the skills needed to demonstrate the benefits/advantages of skilled design work and how to effectively communicate that to potential clients.
