Interprofessional Education
The College of Health Sciences & Professions interprofessional curriculum - a graduate curriculum that synergistically engages CHSP students in different disciplines and programs and educates them as interprofessional teams. Congruent with the current healthcare team practice philosophy, this novel approach to core education helps better prepare healthcare students at all levels to work in the global healthcare environment.
The Interprofessional Education (IPE) Institute team, led by Dr. Katie A. Lamberson, consists of faculty and administration across all College of Health Sciences & Professions departments. The IPE team strives to develop interprofessional models of education in which faculty, students, and staff can collaboratively learn and practice healthcare; and aims to continue facilitating our community service outreach efforts through partnering with the Departments of Counseling, Graduate Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Health Administration with regional and international affiliates.
The IPE graduate curriculum is rooted in four core competencies outlined by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative. These competencies are widely recognized as best practices in the field of IPE.
- Values and Ethics, which address mutual respect and shared values among interprofessional team members.
- Roles and Responsibilities, which involves knowledge of each professional’s role in addressing the healthcare needs of patients and populations.
- Interprofessional Communication, which focuses on responsive communication that supports a team approach to healthcare.
- Teams and Teamwork, which emphasizes relationship building skills needed to function effectively in a healthcare team.
