Owen Hall

Information

Constructed in 2001 and named for Dr. John H. Owen, this co-ed residence hall is a five-story brick building containing 76 four-bedroom/two-bath apartments housing up to 314 residents in single gender apartments.

The contract for Owen Hall residents will run mid-August until the last day of finals for summer courses for students enrolled in summer courses, and through the fourth Friday in July for students not enrolled in summer courses.

It is staffed with eight resident assistants and one resident director.

Newly Admitted Fall Students
New ��ϲʿ�� students may apply for a housing contract by completing the following steps:

Apply for admission at ��ϲʿ�� as a residential student or contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to request a change to residential status if the student originally applied to ��ϲʿ�� as a commuting student.

Housing contracts, room selection, and roommate selection are all available through the ��ϲʿ�� housing portal. Deadlines for housing are communicated through email.

Current ��ϲʿ�� Students
Current ��ϲʿ�� students may apply for a housing contract by completing the following steps:

Residence Life will notify current residents via e-mail before the housing contract process opens.

Please note that per ��ϲʿ��'s Residence Policy, students who are freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus. Students who believe that they have a unique hardship may request a waiver to the Residence Policy through the Dean of Students Office.

Please note that housing contracts are binding once completed. Students wishing to cancel a housing contract should consult the cancellation terms in their housing contract as termination fees will likely apply.

Moving In

Fall Semester

New student move-in for fall 2024 will occur by appointment only on August 8, 9, and 10. Please check your ��ϲʿ�� email the first week in July for the opportunity to sign up for a move-in appointment. Students must submit a photo for their ��ϲʿ�� Nighthawks Card prior to coming to campus

Move-in Information

Move-in will be by appointment only August 8, 9, and 10. ��ϲʿ�� classes begin on August 12, 2024. Please check your ��ϲʿ�� email the first week in July for the opportunity to sign up for a move-in appointment. Only two cars are permitted per student, and only two guests will be permitted for each student.

��ϲʿ�� Nighthawks ID Card

��ϲʿ�� students must bring their ��ϲʿ�� Nighthawks ID card with them to check into the residence halls. New students may pick up their ID card at orientation. Students not attending an in-person orientation may submit their Nighthawks ID photo online at least 3 days prior to their move-in and pick up their card at move-in.

Changed Your Mind About Attending ��ϲʿ��?

Students who completed a housing contract with Residence Life and will not attend ��ϲʿ�� should e-mail residencelife@ung.edu and attach a completed cancellation form as soon as possible.

Spring Semester

New student move-in for spring 2025 will occur on Sunday, January 12 from noon - 2 p.m. Students must submit a photo for their ��ϲʿ�� Nighthawks Card prior to coming to campus.

Move-In Information

New residents moving into the residence halls for spring semester should receive an e-mail from Residence Life that contains important room and roommate information. This e-mail also includes the day/time for move-in and the building into which you will be checking. Please note that students should not arrive before the assigned move-in time, as they will not be allowed to move-in early.

��ϲʿ�� Nighthawks ID Card

Students must bring their ��ϲʿ�� Nighthawks ID card with them to check into the residence halls. Students will not have access to the dining hall without it.

Move-In Checklist

You must have your ��ϲʿ�� ID with you in order to check in. (See the semester sections above for further info.)
Have all of your boxes/belongings labeled with your name and room number.
Know which building, room, and time you have been assigned. Residents will check in at their assigned building and will not be allowed in before their assigned time.
Talk with your roommates about what each person will bring for the bathroom, kitchen, and living room.
Remember that the elevator in Owen Hall only goes up to the 1500s. If your apartment is on the 1600s floor, be prepared to move items from the 1500s to the 1600s via stairwells.

FAQs

Can I move into my room early/late?

The residence halls open at designated times for each semester. Residents are not allowed to move in early. Each student is expected to move in at their assigned time.

What items should I bring with me?

You should bring items that will make you feel most comfortable in your room. However, remember that the living room and kitchen area will be shared with other people. Also, there are items not allowed in the ��ϲʿ�� Residence Halls. You may access What To Bring, a list of recommended items to bring, a list of items provided in the residence hall and room, and a list of items prohibited in the ��ϲʿ�� residence halls.

What happens if I do not like my roommate?

Most residents self-select their roommates through the ��ϲʿ�� Housing Portal. For students who do not self-select, the Residence Life Staff puts a lot of effort into assigning compatible roommates, and we ask you to make every effort to work out minor issues. However, in either case, there are several opportunities during the year for a student to find a new roommate and change rooms.

Can I stay on campus during the holidays or breaks?

Owen Hall is open during university semester breaks. Residents are required to complete a 50-week contract.

Is it possible to get a single or private room?

All bedrooms in Owen Hall are single occupancy. However, each apartment has multiple residents, so please be prepared to share bathrooms, living rooms, and kitchens with roommates.

Can I live off campus?

Full-time students who have not earned 60 semester hours and do not meet one of the exceptions to the Residence Policy must live on campus.

Students may live off-campus if they live with and commute daily from the permanent legal residence of parent(s) or grandparent(s) within 50 miles of the campus; are 21 years of age or older; or have completed 2 years of successful active military service.

Am I required to purchase a meal plan?

No. Residents in Owen Hall are not required to purchase a meal plan. However, residents may purchase a 10, 15, or 21 meal plan through the ��ϲʿ�� Business Office or a block plan through ��ϲʿ�� Card Services.

What do I do if I get locked out?

Residents who are locked out should attempt to locate roommates first for assistance. If roommates are unavailable, the Owen Hall staff will be more than happy to open your apartment. Please note that progressive lock-outs will be charged a lock-out fee.

My ID won't allow me in the building. What do I do?

All Owen Hall residents should be able to swipe their ID cards for access into the building from the three main doors. If your card does not allow you access into the building, please stop by the Owen Hall office and leave your name, ID number, door you attempted to access, and the time you tried to access the building. Owen Hall staff will contact you if you need to take additional steps.

How much does it cost to live on campus? When is the rent due?

Cost is based on a single-occupancy-bedroom in a 4-bedroom apartment. Please refer to the Rates & Contract Information tab on this page.

Rent is billed each semester by default. Payments are due each semester when other ��ϲʿ�� fees are due. Students make one payment for fall semester, one payment for spring semester, and summer housing is automatically covered by those payments.

Financial Aid may be used toward housing costs. You may contact the Financial Aid office at 706-864-1412.

Where should I park?

Residents of Owen Hall may park in any residential parking zones, including the lot which is located right outside the building.

All students are allowed to have a car on campus as long as it is registered with Parking Services. All fees are included in student fees.

Where is the laundry room?

Laundry facilities are located in all Residence Halls for student convenience.

As of Spring 2024, the cost for a wash or dry is $1.75 per load. To purchase a wash or dry you will need to download the Speed Queen App and use Campus Cash to pay. Campus Cash through the Speed Queen App is the only form of payment that you can use, no other forms of payment are accepted.

Where do I take trash and/or recycling?

Trash bins and recycling bins are located on the back of the building in the parking lot near the 1300’s floor ground level exit door. Please utilize the recycling bins provided in your apartment to make separation easier.

What if I have a maintenance problem in my apartment?

If there are any problems in your apartment (a broken faucet, a clogged shower, a light out), please utilize the QR code on the back of your door to submit a maintenance request. You may also submit a request by contacting the front office of your Resident Assistant. If an emergency situation (flooding toilet, water leak happens at night or over the weekend, please contact the Owen Hall front office or the RA on call.

Where may I smoke?

��ϲʿ�� is a tobacco free campus. Smoking is prohibited on campus. Violators will be referred for disciplinary sanction

How do I hook up the internet or WiFi?

To hook up the Internet, place an Ethernet cord into the red jack in the wall. A prompt will appear at the first attempt to open Internet connection. For WiFi access enable your device and search for ��ϲʿ�� ResNet. Use your university login for access.

How do I rent a cart?

Need help carrying in all of those groceries or items from home? Stop by the Owen Hall desk with a photo ID and check out one of our carts!

What are the visitation hours Owen Hall?
Residents may host visitors from outside the building and residents of the opposite sex during the following visitation hours:

Monday - Thursday: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.

Friday - Sunday: Friday, 10:00 a.m. - Monday, 12:00 a.m. (Sunday midnight)

What are the visitation policies for Owen Hall?

Any member of the opposite sex must sign in with the office anytime he or she enters the building. The guest may visit only the room for which they are registered and must be escorted by the resident at all times. Cohabitation is prohibited on the ��ϲʿ�� campus.

Where do visitors park?

Visitors not from ��ϲʿ�� may stop by ��ϲʿ�� Parking Services to pick up a visitor’s pass. Visitors with a pass may park in the visitor designated spaces near Owen Hall.

Where do I go if the alarm goes off?

If the fire alarm begins to go off, exit the building immediately. Do not use the elevator, only use the stairs. Please move to the front parking lot of the building for further instruction.
