Dr. Kathleen Woodward graduated from The Ohio State University with a Ph.D. in Political Science.  Her major was Comparative Politics with an emphasis on developing countries, Islamic politics, and Southeast Asia.  She conducted her dissertation research with several grants, the most notable being the Fulbright-Hays Award for Dissertation Research and received a Presidential Fellowship Award for writing the dissertation.  Her research focused on the Indonesian transition to democracy.  She examined the role of elite negotiations in shaping the path of the transition, particularly the role Islamic leaders played in the transition during a time of mass protests and uncertainty about the future direction of the country.  Currently, she is working on academic papers comparing the Indonesian and Egyptian experiences with transitions to democracy; the consolidation of Indonesian democracy; and the role of mass based Islamic groups in Indonesian politics.

In addition to her Ph.D., Dr. Woodward holds two Master degrees.  One is in International Affairs and the other in Education - Instruction and Curriculum.  She has a B.A. in Political Science.  She has also studied in intensive Indonesian language programs at several institutions, including the University of Wisconsin, the University of Washington, and Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, as well as spending a semester at the University of Chicago, Department of Mid East Studies, as a traveling scholar while studying Arabic.  She has lived in Indonesia and Australia and traveled to Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. 

Dr. Woodward began working at Gainesville State College in 2008 and began coordinating the Women’s Leadership in Public Service Institute, which partnered with Rutgers Center for American Women and Politics, in 2009.  She became Chair of the Department of Political Science, Criminal Justice, Philosophy, and Religion in 2010.  After the consolidation with North Georgia College and State University, she became Associate Department Head for the Department of Political Science & International Affairs.  She teaches courses within Comparative Politics and International Relations and enjoys mentoring students.  

I have lived in Indonesia and Australia and traveled to Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. I love to travel and explore new cultures. My research interests include but are not limited to globalization, democratization, Islamic politics, developing countries, women's participation in politics, and American Government. I get joy from teaching, researching, and learning.
