Celebrated for decades, Weeks of Welcome (WOW) will help University of North Georgia (Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û) students celebrate a new semester in events from Aug. 21 to Sept. 1. The first two weeks of each semester are a chance to meet other students, interact with faculty and staff and get better acquainted with university resources, opportunities, and expectations.

These events, overseen by the Office of Student Involvement, can foster campus community engagement, promote local culture and traditions, and create a sense of unity and pride among Nighthawk students. This year, there will be more than 100 WOW events university-wide allowing for there to be something for everyone.

By participating in these events and activities, students are more likely to feel welcomed, supported and engaged, which can contribute to their overall success and satisfaction during their college experience.

"By participating in these events and activities, students are more likely to feel welcomed, supported and engaged, which can contribute to their overall success and satisfaction during their college experience," David G. Michener, director of Student Involvement, said. "This also helps students build critical thinking skills and assists them with their time management skills as well."

Higher education studies show students who get involved early in outside-of-the-classroom experiences have an elevated GPA compared with students who do not.

"We know how important it is for our Nighthawk students to transition to include a variety of experiences that help them connect to the people, places, and traditions that will help them be successful in their first year and beyond," Michener said.

Nighthawk Kickoff will allow students to hear from Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û leadership on each campus:

  • Blue Ridge: Noon Aug. 30, outside patio
  • Cumming: Noon Aug. 28, lower lobby
  • Dahlonega: 7 p.m. Aug. 21, Drill Field
  • Gainesville: Noon Aug. 21, Student Center Quad
  • Oconee: 11 a.m. Aug. 23, Quad

Students can find out more information about the various events and activities taking place by visiting the Weeks of Welcome webpage and clicking on their respective campuses.
