Students and faculty help preserve Mount Hope Cemetery

Cemeteries tell stories. They tell stories that have been undiscovered.

So about a year ago the mayor of Dahlonega asked us if we could get involved in interpreting and maintaining the cemetery. Our goal is that future generations will be able to come and enjoy the cemetery and also read the headstones.

My name is Keneddi Horn. I'm a student at University of North Georgia. We've actually had a few exciting projects, and one of them is the Mount Hope Cemetery preservation project. So one thing we've been focusing on is pinpointing who exactly is buried, what they did, how they were involved in the community, and why people today should care about those things.

We've already created a brochure for the Visitors Center, but step two is to finish digitizing the cemetery. A student, Zach Pilgrim from our IESA program, has already begun this process. His end goal is that anybody in the world can log on and learn about Mount Hope.
