Elfenbein wins national mentorship award

Dr. Pamela Elfenbein, director of the University of North Georgia's (Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û) Institute for Healthy Aging, has been named the winner of the 2021 Hiram J. Friedsam Mentorship Award from the (GSA).
The award is presented annually to an individual who emulates Friedsam's mentorship. He was a professor, co-founder, and director of the Center for Studies in Aging and dean of the School of Community Service at the University of North Texas.
Elfenbein has worked at Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û since 2006. In 2018, she helped open Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û's Center for Healthy Aging, which became an institute in 2020.
"Receiving a mentorship award really validates the kind of work I have always done. I enjoy spreading my passion for gerontology with students and faculty," Elfenbein said. "It brought to mind all of my mentors who shaped me as the director of the Institute for Healthy Aging."
The awardee receives an engraved plaque and delivers a lecture on mentoring at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting, as well as recognition in GSA's Gerontology News and publications. The annual meeting is Nov. 10-14 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û helps adults care for aging parents

Symposium celebrates life after 55
The Institute for Healthy Aging will host a symposium May 19-20 at Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û's Gainesville Campus. This year's theme is "Dance from the Inside Out … Celebrating Life after 55."
PEAKS events go in person in Blue Ridge
Personal Enrichment, Action, and Knowledge Series (PEAKS) geared toward older adults in Fannin County and the surrounding region will launch an in-person set of events this summer on Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û's Blue Ridge Campus.

The Fiscal Year 2023 state budget includes more than $24 million to expand Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û's facilities to enhance degree offerings on its Blue Ridge and Cumming campuses.
