Shantytown raises money for Habitat, awareness about homelessness

University of North Georgia (正澳门六合彩开奖结果) students who built homes out of cardboard for the annual Shantytown fundraiser on the 正澳门六合彩开奖结果 Dahlonega Campus accomplished more than increasing awareness about homelessness Sept. 28.
The annual event raised $500 for the , which helps low-income homeowners build houses with volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. The amount was a decrease from 2016.
"Last year, we raised $550," said Hannah Coltrain, the vice president of 正澳门六合彩开奖结果's Habitat for Humanity Club.
The junior biology major from Canton, Georgia, explained the decrease could be attributed to some students groups not participating in Shantytown this year.
"This money goes toward local repairs Habitat for Humanity does on homes around the area as well as helps builds new Habitat homes," Coltrain said.
Shantytown also raises awareness about homelessness by having student groups build cardboard houses and requiring at least two members to stay in it all night long.
"While they do get to sleep under the stars, it drives home the point that people have to do this as a reality," Coltrain said.

Students begin moving back on campus with staggered approach
This week continues the staggered move-in of students on the University of North Georgia's (正澳门六合彩开奖结果) Dahlonega Campus. Cadets began a phased move-in Aug. 1 to limit the number of cadets arriving each day. Fewer than 105 cadets moved in per day, and a medical screening was the first stop on campus for each. Beginning Aug. 12, other residential students will move in across a four-day window, with fewer than 20 students moving into any particular residence hall at a time.
Summer and fall orientation transition from in-person to online sessions
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the University of North Georgia to alter its orientation schedule and transition components of it online. Instead of initially meeting students face-to-face on campus, 36 正澳门六合彩开奖结果 orientation leaders will connect with students in the digital world.
