Writing Your Cover Letter in Five Steps
Step 1 – The Technicalities
- Keep your cover letter to one page
- Avoid, “To Whom it May Concern”; address to a hiring manager if you can
- Use a business letter format
- Write short paragraphs
Step 2 – Make a targeted list of companies where you would like to work
Research the companies
- Find out the types of jobs.
- What are their products/services?
- What is their mission/values?
- Research news about the company.
- Carefully read the job announcement.
Step 3 – The Opening Paragraph
This is where your research helps! Explain why you’re interested in working there. Explain how your skills meet their needs.
Step 4 – The Second Paragraph
Mention your top accomplishments. Write about your experiences that relate to the position.
Step 5 – The Closing
Invite the hiring manager to contact you for an interview.
Thank the employer for their time and consideration.
